Racing NSW has today received overwhelming support from members of the industry regarding the current legal proceedings over race fields legislation. In three separate releases, the NSW jockeys association, Racehorse association and the Provincial Association Of NSW have all urged Racing NSW to continue the fight against wagering operators. Each release highlights the importance of what various racing associations throughout NSW base on the success of the legislation which would see a 1.5% levy imposed on the turnover of all wagering operators utilizing NSW race fields. “NSW race clubs have become increasingly reliant on wagering revenue and unless wagering operators pay the 1.5% under the legislation, all sections of the industry will feel the impact,” Geoff Barnett, Chairman of the Provincial Race Clubs Association, said today. “NSW Provincial Race Clubs know better than anyone how their operations and financial viability have been affected by the failure to receive an appropriate return, to this point, from certain operators for wagering on provincial race meetings,” he added. “All sections of the industry should support Racing NSW in representing the best interests of all participants.” The plight of Racing NSW is gathering momentum, even with the NSW Bookmakers Co-operative last week reluctantly accepting the 1.5% levy despite the additional fees they themselves will incur. The sole reason for supporting the legislation is due to a belief what Racing NSW are currently striving for is in the best interests of racing. "We understand the Racing NSW position and the need for all wagering operators to pay a fee for the use of NSW race fields and support the legislation in principle,” NSW Bookmarkers Co-operative chairman Mick Rolfe said.
